OVER THE LAST YEAR, THE CENTER HAS ORGANIZED 7 COMMUNITY EVENTS AND PRESENTED AT 5 PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCES TO A TOTAL AUDIENCE OF OVER 1000 PEOPLE AS PART OF OUR MISSION TO SPREAD AWARENESS OF AND EDUCATION ABOUT FASD AND THEIR IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITIES! The community events have primarily centered around showing the documentary Moment To Moment: Teens Growing Up with FASDs. This powerful film provides an excellent portrayal of the broad array of challenges that teens with FASDs and their families face, and has served as a good starting point for facilitating more in-depth discussions about FASD. So far, we have shown the film to over 500 people, including targeted viewings for medical professionals, substance abuse treatment center staff, youth corrections staff and inmates, and two showings at the Bear Tooth open to the general public. Our board members have given presentations, participated in panels and led workshops at five conferences to a combined audience of over 500 people, including educators, mental health practitioners, addictions & behavioral health professionals, nurse midwives, and maternal & child healthcare providers.

With donations from many of you, we were able to raise enough funds to send Sierra, a teen with FASD, and her guardian to the International Research Conference on Adolescents and Adults with FASD in April.
She came back brimming with ideas for how to advocate for herself and eager to share her experiences of living with FASD with her community. One of the ideas that Sierra brought back from the conference was to start a support group for teenagers with FASDs. With her help, the Center has been facilitating two support groups since October that meet monthly, one for teens with FASDs and the other for their caregivers. We have had a total of 28 participants so far, with generally very positive reactions from both the teens and their caregivers. The topics and format for each meeting is decided based on feedback from the participants, and we are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the community! If you are interested in participating in or making a referral to this group, please contact us at: info@alaskacenterforfasd.org |
